Gently

I woke last night at 11:30pm and didn't return to sleep until well after 2am.  For some reason, Bowie just would not go back to sleep.  We have never encountered this stubborn kind of refusal on her part before, so it was new and very frustrating.

At 1am, I stumbled into a version of myself that I wasn't aware existed.  This version was very very angry with this small human.  I wanted to take her square by the shoulders and demand she stop it right now.  I accused her of acting like a crazy person, I assumed she rebelling and needed corporal punishment.  I wanted to reason with her, then I wanted to yell at her, then I wanted to spank her, then I wanted to give her away.  Finally, I had to leave the room.

I felt my blood boiling as I stood in my dark kitchen, sobbing like a spoiled child.  Why wasn't she behaving as predicted? I was so illogically angry with this small human who cannot control her emotions or her sleep patterns or her incoming teeth or her body that wants to crawl so bad it's waking her up in the middle of the night to practice.

When dealing with a screaming baby (which we've had little practice at), I always try to take a deep breath before picking them up - to calm my energy and to center myself in patience and understanding.  Last night, after the third time going into Bowie's room in half-an-hour, I forgot to breathe.  I snatched her up, spoke rudely to her, and tried hard to fight a losing battle, mainly because I was mad.  I lost it and had to put her back in her crib immediately, for fear of whatever it was this version of Candace was capable of.  It was time to tag-team Joelio.

This morning, with my 5-hours of sleep acquired periodically through the night, I woke with my heart in my heels.  I'm was so tired I could barely lift Bowie. She played happily with her toys and I sat sipping my coffee, I began to unravel the knot of sadness pervading my being.  How could I have anything but pity for this beauty? I was so disappointed in me.

Who can stay mad at that sweet face?

She turned and flashed a gorgeous smile at me and I shrugged with resolve.  Such a beautiful stinker.  I forgave her immediately.  She forgave me immediately.  Repair complete.

However, what of the repair I must conduct within myself?  Anger is a powerful perspective-stealer, so I don't blame myself for feeling the surge of of violent rage*, or for setting B back in her crib less gently than usual.  I say to myself what I've said to my mom friends all these years, "You are human.  You are imperfect. You are learning.  Forgive yourself and move on."

So gently, I pour that message into a tall mug, heat it up, let it brew, swirl it around, and let the warmth creep into the inflammation surrounding my soul, letting it sooth the self-hate.

Forgive yourself.
Move on.

Though silly, I did half expect that when I became a mother, I would never lose my temper.  I would be so in love with this little blob of flesh that all vice would cease to exist.

I expected to be good at it immediately, which is about as logical as expecting Bowie to stand up and walk without wobbling, to never have to actually learn, but to already be perfect.  But just as Bowie has to practice all of her new skills, so I have to practice mine.  As I learn to walk into the identity of motherhood, I am keenly aware that I'm falling. No one is going to pick me up, dust me off, and kiss my boo-boo anymore.

As I mother Bowie gently, so must I mother myself gently.

Forgive yourself.
Move on.

Ah, but the painful memory of my thoughts...who did she think she was! Here I am, sacrificing my sleep. Here I am, muscles on fire with the pain of bouncing her back to relaxation.  Here I have given her my very body, provided such a good life, so much love, plenty of food - all the best of myself is hers - all her needs are addressed completely and willingly.  Instead of the thanks I deserve, I was kicked.  Instead of the love I deserve, I was hated.  Every scream of terror spoke clearly and loudly that all I've done for her wasn't good enough.

Only that's not at all what she was saying, which of course I can see only now in the light of day. She was saying that she was overtired, or her stomach hurt, or she couldn't get back to sleep, or she was hungry, or had a dirty diaper.  She had a myriad of MUCH more logical reasons for her actions than I did.  What she didn't possess was the ability to express those needs in any other way outside of the language of babies, the message of crying.

It is in the space between us that the true exchange happens.  The place where I have noticed my negative feelings and left them alone in the background, not letting the judgement for having them take precedence over Bowie's immediate needs.  The place where she is saying only what she needs, not what I think she means. The place where it's okay that I wasn't immediately patient with a screaming tyrant at 2am. The place where I can forgive myself and move on.

I can see that place now. It's the place where I lost my shit.  It's the place where I'll be all day, crawling on my knees in humility and gently gathering myself back to love.

*And let's not forget that feeling something negative isn't wrong.  It's how we act upon that feeling that matters.  Even in the searing blindness of anger, I was able to restrain myself from the normal human reaction of yelling back accusatory words when someone yells them at you.  For this small victory, I will celebrate.

upon a rather "something" rant.

it is such a temptation for me to talk myself out of how i feel based on the logic that i will no longer feel that particular way in a few hours, days, weeks. while i feel it is truly wise to have buckets and buckets of this truth, this perspective of the universe that our lives are but temporal in the grand scheme (i realize this does not comfort everyone), i really have to be careful to avoid persuading myself out of moods.

some might call this wallowing.
yep.

i suppose that if you are the kind of person that finds wallowing to be among the 7-deadly sins, than perhaps you would advise that i surround myself with positivism, adjust my negative attitude, pull myself up by the bootstraps and just make myself feel better, damn it.

but at what cost? if these "moooods" are so continually battled, what part of myself is being severed? all of this simply so i can go about my day and feel better, feel productive, feel useful? i agree that to feel better, productive, and useful are important emotions, but are they much more important than to feel worse, unproductive, and unused? why do we persuade ourselves out of moods? it's NEVER made sense to me. "i am going to now talk myself out of feeling angry at my husband because it is not acceptable nor helpful to our relationship, plus it will freak the kids out." speaking from a somewhat narcissist perspective (in that only 1 person is really overly affected by my moodiness, and i don't have to deal with hiding myself for a more appropriate time so my kids feel more secure), i realize that not every single emotion needs full reign when it presents, but i also think there is something truly cauterizing about simply deciding that how we feel is unacceptable and doing any and everything to just get out of that mood.

i do not want to cauterize my soul. i have done this enough, dears, and the work at the other end of it is the steepest of uphill battles.

le sigh.

it's been one of those weeks where peeling hard boiled eggs turns into the most frustrating task OF YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. where you slice one piece of coconut cake and two seconds later it promptly falls onto the carpet (with tiny pieces of coconut everywhere). you then pick it up to throw away and miss the garbage can. it mocks you in a big splat on the kitchen floor. you reach for a paper towel, and in your frustration manage to pull the entire roll of paper towels from its rack.

also, did i mention? you have ABSOLUTELY.NOTHING.TO.WEAR. and you are the fatest person alive?

these things are temporal.
how i realize this.

but what of my career? what of houses, babies, graduate school, marriage, money, photography, writing, mental health, spiritual questions, and fathers? these things, not so temporal.

and how can i possibly muster the energy to think on these things when i cannot even walk five blocks to the grocery store to pick up celery?!

and in these days, i feel, truly feel that life is sometimes just fucking impossible.
oh, and also, that having a uterus is a cruel, cruel joke.

but, since there is no getting around my week or uterus, i have comforted myself with a bottle of 2008 Chilean savignon blanc in the afternoon. also, i am going to attempt some ridiculous baking feat, because that is just how crazy i feel. muuuaah.

the end.

*i am sure i won't feel this way tomorrow, so please disregard me.**

**that was sarcastic.

music makes everything better

for this melancholy month of may, i choose goldfrapp's new album, "seventh tree." especially today - especially just for this lyric:

"she's like a little bird
she flies from tree to tree
to see what she can see
she's far away from me"

i needed an escape. i took a green drive. it rained. it cried. everything was wrong. allison goldfrapp'ed me into her bosom and made it better.

i am a little bird. i am far away from me.

now, it's later. i am sitting in one of my favorite spots in all of eternity - my in-law's. (strange? you have to meet them to understand). The boys are playing some Tri-Ominos, I sit and gaze at this dreamy new cookbook my lovely devon gave me as a housewarming present...mmmmm, the food of france. the book could never be as lovely as my devon, but it's a damn fine present. what should i cook, my pets? how about some cauliflower soup? crepes suzette? maybe a light salade nicoise?

friends, it's hard to keep writing when what's inside feels unacceptable or unbeneficial to share. i want to do it anyway, because i really need it. so i guess... sorry, my loves, but this is for me. this one i am saving for my achy soul today. how i long for the release of soul that comes from the sweet sound of pressy keys and the scribble of pen to parchment.

for some of the first times in my life...i know it. i know anger.

it
feels
cleansing.

some weekend highlights to share:
  • thomas street bistro. yes, it's on my street. joel and i are 2 for 2 on hoorah restaurants within walking distance of our abode. a shift in some really upsetting friday energy came in the form of a random $400 bonus that joel came home with....with accolades from his job. he then treated me to a meal out (a rather scary portion of income goes to our dining experiences, she confesses sheepishly). we lazed over a 3 hr meal, four courses, a bottle of wine, and fabulously cute frenchman telling us cute stories about his provencial town. we then meanderd round about ways to our house, stopping at an ivy-COVERED brick building that joel was very tempted to ascend. once we got home, we enjoyed a rousing game of boogle, and despite your guesses that i would win (due to my superb wordsmithery), we were tied.

  • my baby sister-in-law, julie had her bridal shower. as with most women in relationships where they are loved, she continues to grow ever lovleier and more whole.
  • an amazing saturday night meal with jason and devon. joel was very on his game and his cooking skills wowed us all. it felt so right to host our first dinner in the new place, and joel and i keep saying how much we love our home. we then took a midnight walk, the four of us, through our urban jungle and explored some gardens, mansions, and hanging ives and arbols. i found a tree that even now, one day later, is calling me...it muse that it will be my summer haven, my solstice where painting, reading, cloud watching, and grape eating will commence.
maybe you come out and play with me?
