a manual to moonlight

The past few nights, the moon has been unreal.  In the time I've had my DSLR, I've managed just about every setting except for FULLY MANUAL (focus, setting, etc).  I have been quite frustrated in the education process, to be honest, and gave up for a bit...shooting instead about 80% manual.  But the moonlight begged, completely pleaded, to be caught.  Here's my process...sparing the technical jargon...mainly because I am still unsure what exactly I did.

Here are my subjects..mini calas and one lone dahlia.
The kitchen light is on here so I can actually see my subjects.  In the complete dark, the screen from the camera blinds me (even though there is a sensor that darkens it when I am looking through the view finder)

Here the settings were picking up on the ambient light from the dining room, but still wasn't what I wanted.

Here I was happier with the exposure, but not the focus.

An improvement in both exposure and steady focusing.

This one was a bit too dark

But this...this one was what I was trying to capture...how the moonlight back-lit the glass in such a magical way.

A portrait version.

I was so happy to have learned something so momentus, and that night in bed looked through my pictures with intruige.  As soon as I turned off the light to go to bed, I noticed how stunning my curtians were also grabbing the moonlight.  I had to get my camera again and start the whole process over.  I have about 6 failed shots of the one above, but finally captured it in the end.

p.s. Did I mention that lots of wine helped these events come about?  If I were too sober, I would have been impatient with the process and given up long since.

ONE LIFE GOAL....CHECK

Goodness me!  Is it really already Friday afternoon?  What a  blur of a week.  As you may have noticed, I've been concentrating most of my bloggular energies over at mine and Kelly's baby, Pretty, Please...trying to get that off the ground and into the already inundated world of design/professional blogs.  There's nothing like hoping, right?! ;)  (Feel free to add us to your following list anytime!)

I've also had the immense pleasure of helping Umber with her show this week in promotion as well as the ever-important task of holding little paintings while she hammers in nails. From my perspective, it looked something like this:

And in between these delightful responsibilities, I still had my own life to keep up with...which includes breakfast with Brad and Kelly, lunch with Devon, phone calls with Niki, Jackie, and my sister, drinks with the Gomes, Brian, and Scott, emails with  my favorite Plume and favorite Raven,  IMing Julie, stroking the belly of my sis Jenn, INCLUDING all of my household chores!  PHEW.  I am one busy socialite.

It's a damn good life is what it is.
Let there be no mistake about that.

Today, I've spent the majority of this sunny weather outside in my wood shed.  Unfortunately for my out-of-shape arms, I was not chopping wood.  I was instead staging a photo shoot assigned to me by my brother-in-law (who is DAYS away from meeting his new little girl!  we are all on edge waiting for the call!!).  I am so happy with some of these sassy pictures and can't wait to share them.

BUT ON TO THE REAL BUSINESS AT HAND!
Joel and I have a new friend and we've been hanging out quite a bit the last few months.  He's also our neighbor, so we often have him over for dinner and he shares his tasty scotch with us!  Well, I had mentioned that Joel was NOT a U2 fan, and how I was so bummed because they are coming to Seattle this summer, and I've not as yet had the pridvlege of seeing them live.

TOTAL SIDE NOTE HERE:
All music taste aside...I'm in the habit of honoring the nostalgic loves of my musical history, and U2 can still make me cry with songs like "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," and "All I want is you," (and about six million other songs), and though I don't listen to them very much anymore, I will always love them deeply.  Therefore, they are on my LIFE GOAL list of live performances to attend...

along with Madonna and Radiohead.
Judge me.
It's really okay.
I can handle it.

MJ was on that list too.
Moment of silence.

There. Thanks for hopping down that rabbit trail with me!

ANYWAY...I was moaning about not being able to go because the saint CANNOT STOMACH Bono...and do you know what my new friend Scott did?  He upped and purchased us KICK ASS SEATS for their June concert...which is right around my 32nd bday!  I am rather elated!!!! He JUST told me last night at the art show, and I've been giddy ever since.  Positively light as air.

Speaking of the art show!

And even more

I am so proud of this gal...as if you couldn't tell.
There is such liberty in being one of her cheerleaders (the real kind, not the pretend to be kind),
such deeply rooted admiration...
because there is something in it that means if she can do it...maybe I can too.
Be an artist, that is.
And live like it.

Happiest of weekends, darlings.  I'm cooking up a yummy dinner tonight and also headed out to the city tomorrow night for drinks with the gang.  I hope this weekend, be it busy or quiet, is exactly what the doctor ordered for you.

Per Diem

I am quite glad that this month's challenge coincided rather nicely with my trip to visit my sister.  Not only was it her birthday weekend (which is picturesque enough), but we also wanted to capture a few images of her pregnancy.  I set out to take 25 images per diem, and have certainly filled that quota and then some. San Diego is a rather tempting muse (even if it's not Seattle).

A few of my favorite images:

12-Month Challenge

In a previous post, I mentioned a project for my 31st year of life. Between now and August 1 of 2010, I will embark upon a 12-month challenge. Each month, I will endeavor to perform a specific task, focusing intently upon that one goal for the entire month. These are all things I would like to see implemented into my life, but feel overwhelmed when they all hit me at once. I am hoping that integrating just one thing will be an easier way to make these things habits.

I have determined that these things must be pleasant and that I must look forward to them. Here are some ideas so far:
  1. Eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables per day
  2. Refrain from any high-fructose corn syrup
  3. Stick unwaveringly to the budget
  4. Reading as the only at-home recreation (as opposed to movies, computer time, etc)
  5. Take an evening walk every night after dinner (5 days/week) and do yoga every morning
  6. Drink the recommended amount of water every day
  7. Learn 1 French word every day
  8. Journal 2 pages per day
  9. Write 1 letter per day or watercolor 1 day per week
  10. Try cooking a new recipe every week
  11. Give myself a self-care night every week - do nails, facial, mask, ect.
  12. Explore a neighborhood once a week

So there are some ideas. We will see what happens, but for August, today marks the day that I stick RIGOROUSLY and METICULOUSLY to the budget. I do the monies at Chateau Bookling, so it can be easy to make exceptions whenever I feel the desire. Overspending has always been a problem for us, and since my unemployment runs out this month, I am trying to grab a tight reign on our lives. Today marks the day! Wish me luck!

I'll be sure to keep you all posted on these adventures!
Also, feel free to join me on your own little escapades and challenges. What would you like to see more in your life?

In other news, the saint and I have been taking some evening walks of late (another great way to not spend money...provided you can forgo an trip to ice cream on the way back). I've had my new baby in tow...man, she sure takes a beautiful picture.

Here she is in entirely unedited form:
